Whether it’s any better than taking the dog out for half an hour is up for debate, but according to TikTok testimonials it’s reputed to yield results.
Whether or not we believe TikTok, it raises the question – what is actually the best way to burn fat?
“The 12-3-30 Method is actually effective,” explains Anthony Maritato, a physical therapist and personal trainer at choosept1st.com. And it works because it balances intensity of movement with duration. As Maritato points out, the optimal fat burning zone ranges between 67.6 and 87.1 percent of maximal heart rate – find that sweet spot, and you’re on to a winner.
“At too high an intensity workout the human body burns more sugar than fat. At too low an intensity workout the body burns mostly fat, but not enough to make a measurable difference,” Maritato explains. “The goal of an effective fat burning workout is to find the highest intensity exercise that burns mostly fat as a fuel source and at a high enough rate to make the workout effective for fat loss.”

“There are two primary factors that influence fat burn,” explains Maritato. “One is the number of calories burned from fat throughout the day when you are not exercising, and the second is calories you burn from fat while you are exercising.”
In other words, we burn calories even when we aren’t exercising. Workouts with a big ‘afterburn’ effect – like those targeting your biggest muscle groups, can ramp this up.
“Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns simply to sustain life,” Maritato says. “Your body requires energy to power your brain, pump your heart, and simply maintain normal resting posture. Several studies have shown that increasing muscle mass also increases BMR resulting in greater calorie burn over while you rest.”

MacPherson advises you lose five to ten percent of your body fat during a weight loss phase, then maintain that weight for at least as long as you spent losing it before starting to lose weight again. “This way your metabolism will recover from dieting and be ready to allow further weight loss without going to extreme lengths,”she says. “This takes a patient mindset wherein you are not overly focused on fast results, but rather sustainable ones – if you crash diet and don't take breaks from dieting, you will not sustain your weight loss.”

Where you can make a long-term difference is in the kitchen. “A popular saying is ‘You can’t out-exercise a bad diet’,” Maritato reminds us. “What most people don’t realise is fat loss is not just about burning calories through exercise, it is about optimising the body’s metabolism and hormonal profile as well,” he explains.
Maritato goes on to explain that there isn’t one single perfect diet because we’re all different, but it’s hard to go wrong with a ‘whole foods’ diet compromising fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats.
“Minimising processed foods and simple sugars may help reduce gut inflammation and fluid retention. While further research is needed, a growing body of evidence suggests gut inflammation is linked to fat gain and difficulty burning fat,” Maritato adds.
Studies also show sleep can help regulate metabolism, and Maritato believes mindfulness can also help us optimise our bodies and intentions.
